Our History
Daniel A. Robinson and Associates, the predecessor to Robinson, Farmer, Cox Associates (RFC), was founded in 1953 to provide consulting services to Virginia’s local governments. The firm initially focused on assessing the financial impacts of annexations and boundary adjustments and provided litigation support for contested government expansion. These early engagements laid the foundation for RFC’s expertise in local government finance, including financial forecasting, budgeting, and contract negotiation support.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the firm expanded into the local government assurance business, offering consistent annual engagements. This strategic shift aligned with the State Auditor’s exit from the sector, creating strong demand for RFC’s growing auditing practice.
The firm was renamed Robinson, Farmer, Cox Associates in 1980 with the addition of Irvin “Jack” Farmer’s tax practice. The complementary nature of the tax and municipal auditing services fueled continued growth. RFC expanded geographically with new offices in Richmond and Radford (now Blacksburg) in the 1980s, followed by Fredericksburg and Staunton in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Today, RFC operates from five offices across Virginia: Charlottesville, Blacksburg, Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Staunton.
Over the past 70 years, RFC has become the leading public accounting firm in Virginia for governmental auditing and consulting services. The firm currently serves 68 of the Commonwealth’s 95 counties, as well as numerous cities, towns, public service authorities, and regional agencies. RFC also provides audit and advisory services to hundreds of nonprofit organizations.
RFC has offered income tax preparation, planning, and consulting for over 40 years. Its professionals serve individuals, sole proprietors, multi-state corporations, and partnerships, with expertise in complex areas such as estate and trust taxation.
Today, the Firm remains the largest governmental auditing firm in the Commonwealth and provides a variety of consulting services to that segment. In addition, the Firm’s tax practice has blossomed into a highly respected and sought out group of professionals that serve businesses and individuals with complex taxation issues.
